Ship Noise & Vibration Impact Assessment

Sound Solution Acoustic Consultancy was commissioned to assess the ambient noise and vibration affecting the living areas of a large LNG Gas Tanker. SSAC were to undertake a Noise and Vibration Impact Assessment across the accommodation spaces and recreation rooms. Furthermore measurements for noise levels and vibration were taken in the offices, galley, hospital and navigation spaces (wheel room-on bridge).

Eligibility for noise control measures will be assessed using guidance given in WHO, Maritime and Coastguard Agency document, and the American Bureau of Shipping.

Our report therefore described a noise survey of the tanker, the subsequent analysis to determine the noise environment of the sensitive rest areas and compared the results with national and international standards and specific criteria. Recommendations were also made with respect to mitigation measures.

In order to determine the existing ambient noise, noise monitoring was carried out in every sensitive rest space along the LNG tanker. The measured noise levels were then used to investigate the scale of noise problem affecting various parts of the ship and the sound reduction materials required to afford a comfortable rest condition.
