Document E Criteria

To denote a pass or fail, the results of the sound insulation tests are compared to the required performance values in The Building Regulations 2000, Approved Document E.

The requirements for New Builds are:

  • An airborne sound insulation value of the walls and floors, known as a DnT,w + Ctr, of 45dB or above.
  • An impact sound insulation value of floors, known as LnT'w, of 62dB or below.

The requirements for Conversions are:

  • An airborne sound insulation value of the walls and floors, known as a DnT,w + Ctr, of 43dB or above.
  • An impact sound insulation value of floors, known as LnT'w, of 64dB or below.
